Online fashion classes have been attempted in various formats in the past, but many fall short of delivering quality education.

In large part, this is due to their asynchronous nature and lack of direct instructor-student interaction. Best case scenario – Instructors send pre-recorded videos and demos to confused students; worst still, the student is bombarded with PDFs and reading materials. This is typically the case even for hands-on, practical areas of study.

At Le Fashion Lab, we initially hesitated to offer distance education for our Fashion Design & Garment Construction program, fearing a compromise in quality. However, the onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic forced us to innovate. Once we were sure we could do this without compromising quality, our online program was born.

We recognized that asynchronous instruction often leaves students stranded without immediate assistance, hindering their progress, especially in fields like garment construction where hands-on guidance is crucial. To address this, we adopted a synchronous model that mirrors the in-person experience – students meet live with instructors for every class session, and for the entire class session. This real-time interaction allows for immediate feedback and troubleshooting, ensuring students receive the support they need to excel.

Our commitment to disrupting fashion education ™ extends beyond synchronous (live) instruction. Leveraging technology and innovative thinking, we developed a virtual learning space where instructors conduct live demonstrations and monitor students’ progress in real-time. Through platforms like Zoom, students and instructors engage seamlessly, with dedicated equipment setups facilitating clear communication and effective teaching methods.

Moreover, our rigorous admission process ensures that online students possess essential sewing skills, setting them up for success in our program. Before starting classes, we provide personalized training sessions to familiarize students with Zoom and to ensure their workspaces are conducive to learning. Through ongoing evaluation and feedback mechanisms, we continuously ensure our online curriculum is meeting the evolving needs of our students.
